Hardwipe Portable Edition is designed to run from a USB drive without installation,
and also under Windows® PE to provide a GUI based boot and nuke data sanitization
solution. This is an advanced feature offering which requires a
Professional Upgrade to utilize.
The Portable Edition offers most of the functionality provided by the Desktop Edition,
including the command line utility, but lacks certain features requiring
close integration with the OS. A 32-bit variant is also available that has been specifically built to support
32-bit platforms and Windows XP.
IMPORTANT: You will need a Professional Upgrade
license key to use this software. You will be prompted for your license key when you launch the Portable GUI for the
first time. The license key may also be entered using the command line utility.
Instructions are provided on the Support page.
Booting from USB
Windows PE, or Pre-installation Environment, is a free minimal
operation system from Microsoft which can easily be used to create a boot image to host
the Portable Edition. You can use both the Hardwipe GUI and command line utility
under Windows PE.
On it's own, the Portable Edition is not bootable. This means that, like the Desktop Edition,
you can use it to wipe files, clean free space and wipe both secondary and external drives.
However, the one thing you can't normally do is to nuke everything on the primary
drive because it's holding the copy of the system OS in active use.
Running Hardwipe from USB boot media, however, will leave the computer's system
drive free to be completely wiped. Be aware, however, that this will clearly leave the
machine inoperable until a new operating system installed.
